With a population slightly over nine million, Sweden is among the smaller European countries, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in charm.
From beautiful islands in the Stockholm archipelago to its frozen north, this amazing Scandinavian nation is steeped in culture and history. The most popular time to visit is in the summer, which can be pleasantly warm, or in the fall, when the leaves are turning and the air is bracingly crisp.
Sweden is far from the cheapest holiday destination, but with natural beauties that are rivalled by the friendliness of its people, its tourists invariably find the experience worth the cost. Sweden is, quite simply, one of the most visually appealing places on earth. With that in mind, let’s look at some of the things to do and see in this land of the Vikings.
Vasa Museum
One of Sweden’s Wonders of the World.
Make a point of exploring its incredible preserved 17th century ship, built to showcase Sweden’s maritime prowess but, sadly, sunk on its launch.
The ship is displayed in a viewing arena which boasts no fewer than six levels, designed for viewing convenience.
Stockholm
The capital city of Stockholm is so full of history that it’s impossible to do it justice in under four days. From beautiful and history-rich museums to action-packed nightlife, experienced travellers know there’s no time to get bored in Stockholm.
Walk along Haga in Gothenburg
Gothenburg’s Haga is quite unlike its Stockholm counterpart. An intimate cobbled pedestrian street originally built in the mid-17th century as Gothenburg’s first suburb, today it is lined with fashionable shops and cafes, making it a great place to stroll, shop and do some people-watching.
Experience the Haga in a unique way by strolling along its cobbled streets and window shops. Make a point of stopping at any of its many wonderful restaurants when you get hungry for lunch.
Stay in the Ice hotel
The Ice hotel is located in the village of Jukkasjärvi, 200 km north of the Arctic Circle. It is created anew every year. Stay in the massive igloo and enjoy its ice dining room, ice bar and ice bed (complete with big fur blankets!).
Experience the bracing cold of Lapland
Situated to the far north are the tundra lands of Lapland. Here’s where you will find and interact with the Sami, the indigenous Swedes who continue their traditional way of life in the snowy landscape. This is a place to do some great skiing, experience the great Arctic north and see reindeer in their natural habitat.
Ski
The locals love their winter games, and skiing is a popular Swedish pastime. A favourite ski resort is the Are, which lies eighty kilometers from Ostersund. It sports the resort’s highest peak – approximately 1400 meters.
Explore the Bohuslan coast
Norway has no monopoly on fjords. This gorgeous coast, carved and smoothed out by glaciers, is a great place to experience fjord-land without the expense of a visit to Norway.
While on the Coast, be sure to visit Tanumshede to see the UNESCO-listed rock-carving site.
Visit Kosterhavet
Located on the Koster Islands and around two hours form Gothenburg, a visit to this marine park is a must. It hosts Sweden’s only coral reef, as well as a number of quaint villages. The whole area is outstandingly beautiful, bikes can be rented to explore the islands.
